Ninth the landing spot for Hawk girls, boys at HOIC

DES MOINES – Medals were hard to come by for the South Hamilton girls’ and boys’ track teams at Monday’s Heart of Iowa Conference meet, as both squads placed ninth in their respective 10-team fields.

Gilbert took home all the team hardware. The Tiger boys piled up 153 points to comfortably beat runner-up CMB (122), while the Gilbert girls had a tighter race, but still surpassed second-place Greene County by 10 points, 136.5-126.5.

South Hamilton collected 36 (girls) and 24 (boys) points.

Alyssa Hegland withstood the cold and windy conditions to grab the silver medal in the high jump, as she cleared 5 feet. The Hawks distance medley relay – Kali Lucas, Ady Wintermote, Allyson Ervin and Anna Moss – also worked its way into the second-place spot in a time of 4:38.39.

Ervin and Moss teamed up with Kayla Lucas and Katie Austin to secure the bronze in the 4×800-meter relay (10:27.83).

The girls’ squad scored in 10 of the events.

Caleb Olson had the strongest night for the Hawk boys’ team, as he placed sixth in both the 400 (54.94) and 800 (2:10.99), and ran a leg on the fourth-place 4×800 (8:30.33).

Devon Fisher, Drake Thompson and Josiah Brown completed the 4×800.

Hunter Griffin was also fourth in the shot put (44-0), as was the 4×400 (3:45.81) of Thompson, Fisher, Olson and Trey Woodall.

South Hamilton will head to Story City on Thursday for a Class 2A State Qualifying Meet.
