FOCUSED PERFECTION

WEBSTER CITY – Playing bad was frustrating enough. But playing bad while his twin brother flourished and won an individual North Central Conference title? That left Alec Fuhs in a sleepless rage as Monday turned into Tuesday.

And then he went out and let his clubs do the talking.

Just 24 hours after he couldn’t even force himself to smile for a picture that went with the conference team crown, Alec Fuhs got back on the birdie train and won the Lynx Invitational title with a 2-under par 70 on the 6,116-yard, par-72 track at Briggs Woods Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.

Booming drives, crisp irons and a hot putter were all it took to get the WCHS junior to forget about the 83 he posted on Monday at the Algona Country Club.

“(Monday) was very frustrating, so I went out to the range and tried some different swing changes,” Alec Fuhs said. “But I still have a lot of work to do.”

Avery Fuhs – the aforementioned league medalist – wasn’t quite as sharp, but still solid enough to fire a 76 for third. It was his success earlier in the week that motivated Alec Fuhs to go pin seeking.

“It was not fun. I did not get much sleep,” Alec Fuhs said of his time between rounds. “I knew I had to come out and beat him, otherwise he would not stop talking about it.”

The twins were the driving forces behind the Lynx team total of 307, which was good enough to capture honors. Humboldt was a comfortable distance behind with a 322, and Ballard rounded out the field with a 361.

WCHS completed its regular season with a blemish-free 51-0 mark when all dual meets and tournaments were factored in. That feat is nice, but it’s not what the Lynx are after. And none of the previous accomplishments will mean much if they can’t get back to the Class 3A state tournament and make a run at the grand prize.

“Up to this point the season’s been pretty good, but we still have some unfinished business,” Alec Fuhs said, referring to the postseason that gets underway on Friday. “I’ve learned through the years that if you think you’re good, just play the next round, so we’re going to have to play our best golf this season.”

John Ferrell added an 80 and Logan Yates was one more shot back with an 81 to round out the Lynx scoring on Tuesday.

Humboldt’s Brenden Schnell was the tournament runner-up with an even-par 72. WCHS also entered two junior varsity players into the field and Connor Shannon took advantage by posting a 79 to place fourth overall.

Shannon’s round started out shaky with a triple-bogey 8 on the par-5 first hole. But he quickly shook off the nerves and strung together eight consecutive pars; he played his final 17 holes at just 4-over.

Alec Fuhs’ round included nine pars and six birdies against just two bogeys and one double. He sent a pair of long iron missiles at the flags on Nos. 4 and 12, both par-5s. They left him with makable eagle putts on both, but he settled for tap-in birdies.

There were also birdies on Nos. 2, 8, 11 and 17. His only hiccup came at the par-3 eighth where a wayward drive to the right of the green led to his only double-bogey.

“I wanted to take advantage of the par-5s and I hit a really nice iron at 17 for a tap-in birdie,” Alec Fuhs said.

Seeing the quick rebound was not a surprise to WCHS head coach Dave Brighton.

“Alec played well on Saturday (in winning the Carroll Kuemper Invite) and then he had an awful day on Monday. But golf is like that,” Brighton said.

Avery Fuhs was in contention at just 1-over after a birdie on No. 11, but he found the trees to the right of the green on No. 12 and that set in motion a three-hole stretch that he played in 4-over. He stayed poised though and finished his round with three pars and a birdie at No. 16.

Ferrell’s lone birdie came at the second hole. Yates birdied the second and 12th holes.

Sean Vogelbacher (83) and Drew Fielder (85) closed out the Lynx varsity lineup. On the JV side, Bryan Ferrell (82) put together a solid round.

Brighton says there’s plenty to work on as the Lynx prepare for Friday’s Class 3A sectional tournament at Veenker Memorial Golf Course in Ames.

“We’ll be on the range and we’ll get some things figured out,” he said. “Drew needs to work on some mechanical things and Logan had been putting very well, but that left him (on Tuesday).”

Joining WCHS at the sectional will be Gilbert, Ballard, Boone, CMB/Colo-NESCO, Iowa Falls-Alden, Nevada and South Tama County. Only the first- and second-place teams will advance to the district meet in Waverly.

On paper it appears to be a two-team race for the sectional crown between WCHS and Gilbert, which won the Heart of Iowa Conference crown and recently shot a 288 at its home course – the Ames Golf and Country Club.

“We’ll probably have to play a little bit better than (Tuesday),” Brighton said.
