With a rich history in Hamilton County, 4-H still achieves

This year at the Hamilton County 4-Herama the Career Achievement Award went to Cady Zimmerman, Gage Smith and Morgan Paulson.

Hamilton County 4-H has a rich tradition dating back more than 100 years.

Boys 4-H in Hamilton County started out in 1919 as countywide livestock clubs, according to the Iowa 4-H Foundation. Girls 4-H started in 1923, the Foundation history states. In 1924 there were four clubs with 60 members.

Over the years, membership has changed. In 1934 clubs were organized on a township basis. In the 1990s clubs were encouraged to become coed clubs.

So here is Hamilton County 4-H in 2023, still relevant and still preparing youth to pledge their hands, heads, hearts and health to better service.

This year at the Hamilton County 4-Herama, which was held October 22 at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds, a new scholarship — the Career Achievement Award — was provided by the Hamilton County 4-H Foundation. Three current high school seniors who will be graduating in the spring were awarded $500 each and a plaque.

Here are their introductions:

“Our first recipient is a 9-year member of the Clear Lake Sailors. She has served in multiple club leadership positions, enjoys exhibiting goats and horticulture at the county fair, and enjoys all the citizenship opportunities 4-H provides: Cady Zimmerman.

“Our second recipient is a 9-year member of Stratford Spirit. He has shown multiple species of animals and is very active in the County Youth Council. Although he won’t always admit it, he enjoys serving as a role model for our younger 4-H members: Gage Smith.

“Our final recipient is also a 9-year member of Stratford Spirit. She has been involved in just about every project area available, and is very active as a junior leader for the dog and horse project. You never know what she will say or do next, but she is extremely reliable and always willing to do whatever is asked of her: Morgan Paulson.”
