South Hamilton teams shine as HOIAC meet host

South Hamilton put on a show for the home fans as hosts of the Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference track and field meet here Thursday night.

As a program, the Hawks won six events with both the boys and girls placing in the Top-5.

Ty Koehnk and Nick Severseike each claimed four league titles, with Koehnk earning the lone individual victory in the 400-meter run.

He also ran on the winning sprint medley, 4×200 and 4×400 relays, with Severseike on the sprint medley, 4×200, distance medley and 4×400.

Kolby Hodnefield was on three of the winning relays, running the sprint medley, 4×200 and 4×400 closing legs. Reece Ricke was also on three while Noah Gunderson, Jonathan Drake and Pete Coburn each ran on one.

Hodnefield added a silver in the 400 with the 4×100 of Landon Greufe, Ricke, Drake and Gunderson placing third. Gunderson was also fourth in the 100.

Leading the way for the Hawk girls, who placed third behind Roland-Story and West Marshall, was the winning 4×400 relay.

Brooklyn Doolittle, Tanna Thompson, Makena Galetich and Ashlyn Erickson capped off their portion of the meet with a time of 4:19.30, finishing just ahead of Perry, who went 4:19.43.

Kendra Hoversten and Claire Hewitt added runner-up finishes, as Hoversten was second in the discus and Hewitt second in the long jump. The sprint medley, 4×200 and 4×100 relays all took home silver.

Sydnee Flaugh, Galetich, Thompson and Erickson ran the sprint medley; Galetich, Doolittle, Erickson and Thompson the 4×200; and Flaugh, Galetich, Erickson and Thompson the 4×100.

Hoversten was also third in the shot put and McKenna Miller finished third in the 800. Placing fourth were Cici Herrick (400), Grace Neuberger (high jump), the shuttle hurdle relay, 4×800 relay and distance medley relays.

South Hamilton heads to Story City for a state-qualifying meet on Thursday.
