Neuroth rips off two goals, Lynx blank Humboldt

HUMBOLDT — The Webster City boys’ soccer team continued to thrive on set pieces and jumped over .500 for the first time this season here Monday evening.

The offensive flow may not be to head coach Craig Signorin’s liking, at least not yet, but the Lynx (3-2) made Humboldt (0-3) pay on a pair of free kicks and a throw-in for a 3-0 victory.

“We possessed and for the most part dominated play,” Signorin said. “We continue to struggle to find our forwards running through channels and playing the ball over the top. It’s improving, but not where we need it.”

WCHS attacked the Wildcats’ back line for 16 shots, including 11 on target. Humboldt countered with 10 shots of its own, six on goal. The Wildcats were particularly effective in the opening half, yet still found themselves down 1-0.

“We looked very unorganized all first half in the back,” Signorin said. “Humboldt has some quality athletes and you have to respect them. The second half defensively was a lot more organized.”

Carter Neuroth rifled in two goals in the win and upped his season total to four. Isaac Bernard pitched in one goal and joined Neuroth at the top of the team’s leaderboard with four. Bernard also had an assist, as did Jackson Moberly.

Neuroth put WCHS in front to stay in the 24th minute off a free kick that floated in the wind and got over the head of Humboldt goalkeeper Joel Osborn.

Neuroth made it 2-0 in the 50th minute off a throw-in by Will Tasler. The ball reached the back post where Bernard played it back across the box to Neuroth, who headed it home.

Bernard’s goal came in the 60th off a Moberly free kick into the box. Bernard used his chest to find the net.

WCHS goalkeeper Carsen Johnson collected six saves. Signorin also credited Michael Gilbert will helping WCHS maintain control throughout the 80-minute contest.

“Carsen made a couple great saves, he’s been looking confident back there for us,” Signorin said. “I can see the guys beginning to put a lot of trust in him.

“Gilbert won every ball that was close to him, which is a game changer when you have someone that can do that.”

WCHS also won the junior varsity match, 2-1. Blake Streigal and Zhak Johnson notched goals for the Lynx.
