South Hamilton’s streak ends with road setback
WOODWARD — The South Hamilton football squad stumbled on Friday night, but the Hawks still have a chance for a home playoff game.
South Hamilton (3-4 overall, 3-1 Class 1A, District 7) fell on the road to Woodward-Granger (6-1, 4-0) by a final score of 49-12.
With a win over Grand View Christian (5-2, 2-2) this Friday, the Hawks will still finish as the district runner-up. They’ve already locked up a playoff spot, but a postseason home contest in Jewell is still in the cards if they can knock off Grand View Christian.
“We still have a lot to play for if we win Friday night…we’d have home-field advantage for first round of the playoffs,” said SH head coach Paul Skartvedt. “Our seniors want to have a great sendoff for their last regular season game.
“I’m looking for a great week of practice and for them to be ready.”
The Eagles had a balanced attack against the Hawks, running for 236 yards and throwing for 208.
“We played a really good Woodward-Granger team that was very physical and they got after us,” Skartvedt said. “We had a couple of key injuries that didn’t help the situation.”
The Hawks had trouble getting their offense going, running for 92 yards and throwing for 71. Kolby Hodenfield tossed a 36-yard touchdown pass to Landon Sogard, while Nick Severseike ran for a six-yard TD.
W-G quarterback Talan Fuson threw for 208 yards on 11 of 15 passing with five touchdowns. Fuson also ran for 97 yards, highlighted by a 15-yard touchdown.
Kane Mahler-Moreno (128 yards) and Max Dalton (70) were the main recipients through the air. Mahler-Moreno had three touchdowns with a long of 35. Dalton had two scores.
CJ Petersen rushed for 100 yards in the win.
“We lost Braden (Young) to an injury and we will see if he’ll be back on Friday,” Skartvedt said. “Kolby Hodnefield showed us some leadership and ability to be able to play any position we need to at any time. He did a very good job at quarterback for really only having one day of practice at that position.”
Hodnefield (nine tackles) and Ashton Williams (eight) paced the South Hamilton defense. Young picked off a pass before leaving with the injury.
