A pair of early touchdowns helped the Webster City football team secure their first district victory of the season, topping Hampton-Dumont/CAL here on Friday night, 18-16.

Luke Estlund ran in two short TDs in the opening quarter, then a safety in the third period ultimately proved to be the deciding points for the Lynx (2-4 overall, 1-1 in the district), who have played the toughest schedule in the state, statistically, this season for Class 3A.

“We’re just really proud of our kids for believing in the process,” WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. “It was great for them to be able to get a win.

“We had some injuries that caused some adversity, but we also had kids step up and make plays, so that was nice to see.”

Cael Nixon rushed 26 times for 107 yards. Jaxon Griffith added 75 yards on the ground.

Jayden Weinzetl and Nixon combined for a sack, with Weinzetl recording 8.5 tackles and Griffith seven. Israel Torres converted both of his extra-point kicks and averaged over 36 yards per punt.

“During the first quarter especially, and then later in the game during a key drive, our offensive line did a great job,” Brim said. “They continue to improve each week and still have the potential to keep getting better.

“Aiden Hrnicek and Jaxon also played great games on both sides of the ball. They are just great football players and competitors, and help to make everyone around them better.”

Since beating Fort Dodge (5-1) to open its season, the Lynx had dropped consecutive decisions to Spencer (4-2), North Polk (6-0), West Delaware (4-2) and Clear Lake (4-2).

Webster City, which is now a perfect 7-0 vs. Hampton-Dumont/CAL since 2008, now hosts Charles City this Friday night. The Comets (3-3, 0-2) fell to Humboldt last Friday by a final of 42-0.

Starting at $3.46/week.
