SILVER MEDAL

The Webster City boys tennis team hosted the North Central Conference Tournament here Wednesday afternoon.

The Lynx placed fifth overall, as Nevada took home team honors ahead of Clear Lake, Iowa Falls-Alden and Hampton-Dumont/CAL. St. Edmond was sixth in the team standings.

For Webster City, lone senior Nathan Wardell made the championship match in the first singles flight of play, falling to top-seed Connery Varsa of Nevada.

Wardell received a bye in the quarterfinals and topped Clear Lake’s Hayden Shear in a battle to advance to the finals. Wardell won the first set, 6-4, Shear claimed the second, 6-2, and Wardell scored the win in a super-tiebreaker, 12-10.

“I was really impressed with the play of Nathan,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “He got off to a great start playing lights out in his first set. Things got a little rough in the second set, but he showed grit in finding a way to win.

“In the finals, despite the score, I thought he played really well. He made Varsa have to bring his A-game, and they had plenty of solid points throughout. He made Varsa beat him, and he gave himself plenty of chances, as well. Really proud of how far he’s come in two short years and wish we could have had him for two more.”

Sage Bock placed fourth in the second singles flight while both doubles teams of Max Anderson and Blake Arjes and Fabian Ferto-Holdgrafer and Vincent Bittner were each sixth in the first and second flights.

“I was very pleased with how we played,” Fisher said. “Congrats to Nevada on the team championship, as they have a really solid team of seniors that showed their experience.

“Our younger guys showed a lot of good flashes of play. They’ve come a long way since we started this season and before they are done and graduated, they will win their fair share of hardware.”

The Lynx conclude the regular season Monday with a dual vs. St. Edmond here.

Starting at $3.46/week.
