Webster City pushes six events to state meet

NEVADA — Oftentimes, the state qualifying meets are the great filter of sorts — separating the great from the good.

The Webster City boys’ and girls’ track and field teams saw representatives push through that great filter, propelling six events to the Iowa High School Track & Field Championships last Thursday at Cub Stadium.

Junior Jaxon Cherry enjoyed a record breaking evening, breaking his own school record in the discus throw with a distance of 168 feet, eight inches to top the field before winning the shot put with a distance of 52 feet, four inches.

Another school record fell by the wayside, as Cherry, sophomore Jayden Weinzetl, junior Keegan Hisler and senior CJ Hisler took third in the 4×100-meter relay. Despite the bronze finish, the time of 43.09 seconds bested the previous record of 43.29 seconds.

Overall, the Lynx boys sent two relay teams — the 4×100 and the 4×200 — to the Blue Oval. The 4×200-meter relay team, made up of Weinzetl, the Hisler brothers and sophomore Luke Estlund, placed fourth with a time of 1:31.64.

CJ Hisler also reeled in an individual appearance at Drake, winning the 200-meter relay with a time of 22.98 seconds.

While it was all well and good for Chad Hisler, WCHS boys’ track coach, he did acknowledge the final track meet for seniors Brayden Henely, Gabe Rollins and Aiden Feltz.

“We did a great job, up and down the lineup,” said Chad Hisler, WCHS boys’ track coach. “Many season bests were achieved, but I want to thank (Henely, Rollins and Feltz) for giving up four years of their lives to compete for the Lynx track team.”

Webster City had a lone representative from the girls’ side of the meet, as sophomore Chloe Savitski qualified for the state meet with a time of 27.61 seconds and a fourth place finish.

“We had several personal records and season’s best performances,” said Clint Howard, WCHS girls’ track coach. “I thought the girls competed well and probably put together our most complete meet of the year. (Savitski) ran a great race. She was seeded 4th going in and ended up qualifying for the state meet.”

Also, Howard had to bid farewell to several key contributors at the conclusion of the state qualifying meet, as seniors McKenzie Mishler, Emma Peck and Sierra Steuerwald ran their final races.

“Unfortunately, we had three seniors end their careers tonight,” Howard said. “(Mishler, Peck, and Steuerwald) are all four year letter winners and will be greatly missed.”

Weinzetl almost locked in an individual appearance, as well, finishing third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.40 seconds.

The Iowa High School Track & Field Championships now await the Lynx, which starts at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

On Thursday, Cherry will compete in the discus throw at 4:30 p.m., while CJ Hisler races in the 200-meter prelims at 4:40 p.m. In the case of CJ qualifying for finals, he will compete at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday.

Savitski enters the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash at 6:30 p.m. Should Savitski qualify for finals, she will race at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Friday begins with Cherry in the shot put, slated for 4:30 p.m., while the 4×200-meter relay team will race at 5:10 p.m.

The 4×100-meter relay team will go to work in the prelims, set for 6:40 p.m. Should the team of Cherry, Weinzelt and the Hisler brothers punch their ticket to the finals, they will race at 3:40 p.m. on Saturday.

Starting at $3.46/week.
