Webster City boys blank G-H-V, 3-0

In their regular season debut, the Webster City boys’ soccer team’s first match against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura was a nailbiter. The Lynx had dig deep, before capturing a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals on March 30 at Lynx Field in Webster City.

In their rematch, the Lynx had no issues with the Cardinals.

Webster City cruised past Garner-Hayfield-Ventura by way of a 3-0 victory in a North Central Conference match held on Monday on the campus of Garner-Hayfield-Ventura in Garner.

Sophomore midfielder Eddy Fuentes and the veteran backfield were the men of the match against G-H-V, as Fuentes netted another hat trick for the visiting side. Freshman midfielder Magdiel Magdaleno contributed to the win with two assists.

“I thought we were pretty dominant for the majority of the game, especially in the first half,” said Craig Signorin, WCHS boys’ soccer coach. “We finished our chances early, which was great to see. I thought our midfield played great in the first half. The defense kept it zero at the back and didn’t give (senior goalkeeper Jonny Magdaleno) too much action throughout the night. Unfortunately, we could only put one away in the second half, our play became a little bit lax and defensive.”

The Lynx continued their winning ways, improving to 6-1 in the NCC and 6-1 overall.

Next up is the purple and gold’s biggest test of the season, as Webster City will prepare to host Humboldt for a crucial NCC tilt. The match is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at Lynx Field in Webster City.

In their previous battle on the pitch, the Wildcats (7-0, 5-0 NCC) handed the Lynx a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat on April 3 in Humboldt.

Against the Cardinals, the Lynx scored two goals in the opening stages of the match. In the fourth minute, senior Isaac Haule cleared a ball from the back line, allowing Fuentes to weave through two defenders and placed a ball into the back of the net.

Four minutes later, Magdiel Magdaleno assisted Fuentes, who beat out several defenders on the dribble and connected for his second goal of the match.

At intermission, the Lynx held a 2-0 advantage. Webster City then sealed the win with another connection between Magdiel Magdaleno and Fuentes, who finished the goal by sliding the ball into the near post.

Webster City had eight shots on goal with four corner kicks, while the Cardinals shot towards the net twice with no corner kicks.
