Webster City boys 3rd in Humboldt
Cherry, Hisler lead the way for Lynx boys track squad
HUMBOLDT — At long last, the weather is getting nice enough for events — particularly, outdoor track meets.
The Webster City boys’ track and field team got their start to the 2023 spring campaign, and it was quite a start — as the Lynx took third overall at the 12th annual Charlie Bunn Relays, held last Thursday at Mason Maach Field.
The purple and gold saw plenty of strong performances, most notably from junior Jaxon Cherry. In the shot put and discus throw events, Cherry netted all-time best throws of 50 feet, 10 inches and 157 feet, seven inches, respectively.
Senior CJ Hisler topped the field in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.45, before aiding his team of junior Keegan Hisler, sophomore Jayden Weinzetl and freshman Aiden Hrnicek to a second place finish in the sprint medley relay with a time of 1:40.11.
The 4×200-meter relay team, consisting of Keegan Hisler, Weinzetl, Hrnicek and sophomore Luke Estlund, also netted a second place finish with a time of 1:36.33.
According to WCHS head boys’ track coach Chad Hisler, the third place was good and provided the Lynx with plenty of upward mobility as the season marches onward.
“It’s a solid third place start to the outside season,” Hisler said. “There were a lot of good things with a lot of room for improvement.”
Next up for the Lynx is a trip to Gowrie for the Southeast Valley Boys Relays, set for 4:30 p.m. today at the Southeast Valley Athletic Complex.
Along with Cherry, CJ Hisler and the relay teams, senior Brayden Henely turned in a nice performance, finishing third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.28. The freshman duo of Carter Mickelson and Justin Callahan paced the Lynx in the 1,600-meter run, as Mickelson took third with a time of 5:02.37 followed by Callahan’s time of 5:17.13 and fifth place finish.
The team of Henely, senior Tristen Maxwell, Mickelson and Callahan did well in the 4×800-meter relay, completing the race in third with a time of 9:04.18.
Complementing Cherry in the discus was freshman Cole Nohrenberg, who landed second in the competition with a distance of 130 feet, seven inches. The 400-meter hurdles had two Lynx competitors within the top five, as senior Gabe Rollins was fourth with a time of 1:05.33, while Weinzetl was right behind with a fifth place finish and a time of 1:05.99.
Freshman Jack Barner was fourth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 11:47.11, and Keegan Hisler settled into a fourth place spot in the Long Jump with a distance of 18 feet, three inches.
