TERRIFIC TRIO

Over the past several years, the Webster City boys’ basketball team had been on the upward trend. The 2022-2023 season saw the Lynx climb the proverbial ladder under first-year head coach Brett Ratcliff, getting as close as the Class 3A-Substate 1 Finals.

Earlier this week, the trio of senior Jaime Grossoehme, senior Ty McKinney and junior Briar Klaver were rewarded for their efforts on the hardwood.

With Algona’s exit from the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Class 3A Boys State Basketball Tournament on Tuesday, the North Central Conference announced its all-conference teams. In the three designated squads, Grossoehme was one of two unanimous selections, while McKinney and Klaver received second team nods.

Grossoehme joined Clear Lake senior Travaughn Luyobya as unanimous first teamers, while Luyobya’s teammate in sophomore Thomas Meyer, Humboldt senior Will Orness, Hampton-Dumont-CAL junior Scott Harr and Algona sophomore Ben Helmers were also picked for the first team.

Grossoehme — who recently committed to Northwestern College — had an incredible season as the Lynx’s leading scorer, netting a total of 344 points. The senior also collected 101 rebounds, 51 assists, 29 steals and 21 blocks.

Grossoehme also averaged 16.4 points per outing.

Klaver was Webster City’s second leading scorer, putting up 300 points and pulling down 176 rebounds in his first full season as a starter. Klaver then tallied 36 assists, 29 steals and 18 blocks, alongside his 14.6 points per game.

McKinney was the fire that fueled the Lynx on multiple occasions, compiling 257 points, 74 rebounds, 70 assists, 27 steals and 10 blocks. By the end of the season, McKinney averaged 12.5 points per contest.

The Lynx completed their winter campaign with an 18-4 record with an 11-3 mark within the NCC.

Thanks to a 9-0 start, Webster City climbed as high as No. 4 in the IHSAA’s Class 3A rankings and remained among the classification’s top 10 squads until the final games of the regular season by going 7-2. In the postseason, the Lynx fought past Gilbert and ADM before falling to Bishop Heelan in the substate finals on Feb. 27 in Fort Dodge.
