BELMOND — The third time was a charm for the Webster City boys soccer team here on Wednesday night.
After recording a draw and a loss during the regular season vs. seventh-ranked Wright County, the Lynx earned a victory when it mattered most, advancing in the Class 2A postseason with a thrilling 1-0 win.
Webster City (11-2-3 overall) will now take on Aplington-Parkersburg (12-3-2) on Friday in the Substate 2 final at Aplington-Parkersburg Middle School. The Falcons advanced with a 4-0 victory at 10th-rated Nevada.
“In 16 years, I told them that game was one of the biggest wins in Webster City soccer history,” WCHS head coach Craig Signorin said. “We were super timid the last time we went up there. We know how talented they were, who to try and slow down. We gave up opportunities outside the box but that’s really where it stopped. They had majority of the possession and we knew that would be the case.
“We just wanted to stay the course, try to be organized and find marks, and find a way up top when it presented itself. I’m so proud of the effort the boys put up from back to the front.”
In the 74th minute of play, Francisco Revolorio Guinac found David Villelas for the game-winning goal.
“Finally broke through late on a ball down the right side,” Signorin said. “Pancho beat a man, got all the way to the endline and slotted it back to David. He had time to take a touch and put away what was to be the game winner.”
Freshman Brandon Burney was perfect in net, denying each attempt by the Broncos (13-1-4) to score. During the regular season, Wright County won, 3-0, with the other match ending in a scoreless draw.
“Burney made a couple good saves, our back line captained by Abisai, Mingo, Grayson and Geo. Ismael came in and played some quality minutes as well,” Signorin said. “Our outside mids played great, Franky continued to make dangerous runs to get into the offensive third. Our guys in the middle battled all game.”
Villelas had three shots — two coming on goal — and Guinac, Aaron Mendoza and Abisai Ramirez-Carmona each had a shot. All four players are juniors for Webster City, which is seeking a fourth consecutive state tournament appearance after reaching the semifinals last spring.
The Lynx are 5-0 since 2011 vs. Aplington-Parkersburg, including 4-0 victory in a substate final last year to send them to state.
