Hawk girls run at Dickinson Relays

CEDAR FALLS — As of this part of March, temperatures are still a bit on the chilly side of outdoor track and field competitions. Fortunately, high school track and field teams from across Iowa can go indoors to get their seasons started.

One of those meets shielded from the elements is the A.D. Dickinson Relays, held this past Monday and Tuesday at the UNI-Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa.

The South Hamilton girls track and field team got things going in the girls’ meet held this past Monday, sending over several representatives.

Of the bunch, senior Kate Barkema and junior Ashlyn Erickson cracked the top 50 in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter run, respectively. Junior Tanna Thompson acquired a PR in the 60-meter prelims, while teammate Grace Neuberger landed within the top 25 in the High Jump.

Barkema achieved a PR in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.86 seconds and a 40th place showing. Barkema also competed in the 60-meter preliminaries, finishing 53rd with a time of 8.51 seconds.

Erickson completed the 400-meter run in 1:06.48, which was good for 47th overall. Erickson also ran in the 200-meter dash, finishing with a time of 29.28 seconds and a 57th place spot.

Neuberger took 24th in the High Jump, clearing the bat at four feet, eight inches.

Thompson completed the 60-meter prelim race with a time of 8.7 seconds, which provided the junior with a personal best. Thompson also took part in the 200-meter dash, completing her heat with a time of 29.49 seconds.

The next meet for the Hawks will be the Iowa Association of Track Coaches’ Indoor Championships, which are set for today at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames. South Hamilton’s first outdoor track meet is the Ram Early Bird Invitational, scheduled for March 27 at Linduska Field in Jefferson.

Sophomore Sydnee Flaugh also participated in the 60-meter prelims, harnessing a time of 9.05 seconds, as teammate McKenna Miller recorded a 1:13.59 in the 400-meter run.

Junior duo Kailyn Northrop and Anna Holm were a part of the 800-meter event, with Northrop crossing the finish line at the 2:52.17 mark and Holm finishing with a time of 2:59.32.

Northrop and Holm teamed with Miller and senior Paige Doolittle for the 4×800-meter relay, taking 41st overall with a time of 11:36.14.
