WEBSTER CITY — The Webster City football team will enter defense of their Class 4A district title with momentum.

The Lynx picked up a convincing 49-14 victory over Mason City here Friday night, moving to 2-2 on the year.

Now begins district play and a date with Fort Dodge inside Dodger Stadium this coming Friday. In Week 1 of the regular season, the Riverhawks posted a win over the Dodgers, 35-30.

Webster City jumped all over Mason City in this one, opening a 21-7 lead after the first 12 minutes of action. They scored three more times in the second before adding a seventh TD in the third.

Jaxon Cherry was one again unstoppable, running the ball 23 times for 247 yards and four of those touchdowns. Ty McKinney had two rushing scores while completing 5 of 8 passes for 99 yards.

“We’ve still got a long ways to go, but we’ve shown improvement from week to week, against super tough competition,” WCHS head coach Bob Howard said.

CJ Hisler had the other score, returning an interception 20 yards. Keegan Hisler caught three passes for 58 yards and CJ Hisler had two for 41. McKinney picked off another pass on defense.

Both Keegan Hisler and Cherry had a sack, with Connor Hanson recording five tackles. Cherry had 4.5 and both Luke Estlund and Brady Jessen recorded four stops each.

After opening the year with a loss to co-No. 1 (3A) Humboldt, Webster City bounced back with a shutout of Boone. The Lynx followed up a loss to fourth-ranked (4A) Waverly-Shell Rock with this performance last Friday night.

“Like last year, it speaks to the competition we’ve played in Humboldt and Waverly-Shell Rock,” Howard said. “The strength of those two teams starts up front and we knew it would be a challenge with our new line. The kids hung in there and continued to get better each week and practice well.”

Last year, the Lynx went unbeaten in district play, including a 41-14 victory.

“I never feel confident, as I can always see lots of areas where we can improve,” Howard said. “I think we’ve progressed the past four weeks and we are basically the same place we were last year, 2-2, going into district play.

“Fort Dodge has some great playmakers so we have another big challenge this week. Everyone is now 0-0, so the first district games are always of heightened importance.”

For Mason City, Kale Hobart was 7 of 20 passing for 104 yards, while Tavien Banks had 16 carries for 72 yards and a score.
