Former Iowa Central standout Jarrett signs with Jets as undrafted free agent

Byron Jarrett just wanted an opportunity to continue playing the game he loves.

The former Iowa Central standout received that from the New York Jets.

Jarrett signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jets recently. He will report to rookie minicamp in the beginning of May.

The current quarterback room for New York includes former league MVP Aaron Rodgers, new backup Tyrod Taylor and recent draft pick Jordan Travis, who suffered an injury last November while leading Florida State University.

“Signing with any team would have been a blessing just like this one,” Jarrett said. “But to be able to be in a veteran QB room and have the opportunity to soak up all of the knowledge of Aaron as well as Tyrod is going to be great and help prolong my career.”

Jarrett played his last two seasons for the NCAA Div. II University of West Florida, making program history by becoming the first quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards and rush for 1,000 in a career.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder threw for 2,552 yards with 25 touchdowns against just six interceptions this past season. Jarrett had at least one TD pass in 11 of the 12 games this past fall for the Argonauts, who went 8-4 and reached the postseason.

West Florida went 12-2 and reached the national semifinals during the 2022 season. Jarrett had over 750 yards of total offense and eight touchdowns in four playoff games that year including wins over two ranked teams.

“Lots of hard work and dedication got me here and I know if I want to stick around, this has to continue,” Jarrett said. “My agent went to battle for me with all of these teams and in the end, this was the perfect situation.”

While at Iowa Central, Jarrett earned NJCAA first team All-American honors, throwing for 2,704 yards and 30 TDs as a sophomore. He led the Tritons to a 9-2 record and bowl game victory.

A graduate of Des Moines Hoover, “Peewee” threw for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns for the Huskies, including a school-record 547-yard performance.

“I am very excited,” Jarrett said. “Never did I think I would get to learn from a hall of famer. This is a dream come true and I’m so excited to continue to grow and get better.”

Along with Jarrett, the Jets will bring in former Minnesota wide receiver Chris Autman-Bell, Michigan edge Braiden McGregor, wide receiver Tyrell Harrell and defensive lineman Leonard Taylor III from Miami, and Army linebacker Jimmy Ciarlo just to name a few.
