Vandalism to Kent Harfst Memorial sculpture has been reported

Vandalism has been reported to the Kent Harfst Memorial Sculpture at the crest of Brewer Creek Park along the walking trail near Des Moines Street in Webster City.

Someone has been using the rocks that are part of the sculpture’s base to etch names and profanity into the concrete.

There are also eye-witness reports of children swinging on the sculpture itself.

Arts R Alive in Webster City, which commissioned and installed the sculpture learned of this during its meeting earlier this week.

“Arts R Alive in Webster City has been so proud of the fact that the public art sculptures in West Twin Park and throughout the community for the past 13 years have had no issues with vandalism or defacing of the sculptures – until recently,” Janet Adams, Arts R Alive board president said Thursday.

“We are disappointed that the Kent Harfst remembrance at Brewer Creek Park is having some vandalism problems. Someone is scribbling inappropriate language onto the finish of the base. They are also taking the rocks that are a part of the sculpture base and throwing them around the hospital hill area. Police and Park and Recreation are aware of this. We hope the incidents will stop.”

A report was filed with the Webster City Police Department earlier in the week.

A security camera has been installed with the hope of deterring further vandalism.
