“Old and Creepy Dolls” program infiltrates Mulberry Center Church this weekend

Your grandmother or your great-grandmother had them when you visited their homes in your youth. Dressed in Victorian Era regalia, their dark eyes stare holes through you — from when you peered into a specific room to when you tried to fall asleep at night.
Dr. Barbara Brown could provide some insights to that.
At 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Mulberry Center Church, located at Wilson Brewer Historical Park, 220 Ohio St., Webster City, Brown will be on hand to discuss what the creepy dolls are all about. Brown will also display several dolls from her well-known collection.
The event is free, and donations are welcome. If you have a creepy doll of your own, you’re encouraged to bring it for show.
“I have a great many interests, including collecting antique dolls,” Brown said. “I particularly like to repair dolls and make costumes for them that are appropriate to the time the doll was made.”
Brown, a psychiatrist and North English native, is known to travel to many national conventions concerning dolls.
“Personally, I do not find most dolls creepy,” Brown said. “I suppose that creepiness lies in the eye of the beholder, as I will present a variety of dolls of different styles, materials and ages.”
According to Brown, the dolls will range from 1830 to 1930, made out of paper mache, wood, bisque and fabric.
“I will present a few dolls that I even think are creepy,” said Brown. “Others are welcome to decide what they find creepy.”
