Ignite-Her training for girls underway Thursday and Friday

About a dozen young women have been in a two day camp this week to learn more about fire-fighting from the Webster City Fire Department.

The program, which is in its second year, is an avenue to teach middle school girls more about fire safety and to encourage future involvement with local fire departments.

Local fire department members who assisted with the training included Lt. Zach Williams, Captain Andy Sowle, firefighter Conner Hannson, Jeremy Estlund, Don Zehner, and Amanda Staley.

Throughout the two days, the girls experienced knot tying, saw how the jaws of life worked, observed and helped with various rescue techniques, all while learning how to do this safely, while trying to save others.

The girls have the opportunity to see what it would be like to volunteer and work as a fire fighter. Amanda Staley and Taryn Sutton from Fort Dodge are two of the women who helped with the training Ignite Her program.

Amanda Staley is one of our part time firefighters. She started here as a volunteer firefighter and is now a part time firefighter. She responds to calls on or off duty, attends drill two times a month, and is fully certified firefighter I and Hazmat operations.

Amanda covers shifts when we have a full time firefighter out due to sickness or vacation.

The girls participating this year include Daytona Duffy, Charley McCrady, Veda Williams, Hallie Anderson, Harper Taylor, Brooklyn Duffy, Hilary Warden, Kaira Naso, Jordan Sowle, Piper Williams, Nya Wagner and Emma Sowle.

Brielle Burgin is a fire cadet and she responds to calls, attends twice a month drills and also attends fire cadet training exercises. When on scene, our fire cadets can catch hydrants, help firefighters with getting needed tools, assist with overhaul, setting up fans for ventilation, and many other tasks outside of the immediate danger to life and health.

Starting at $3.46/week.
