South Hamilton back at home

JEWELL — For the second straight week, the South Hamilton football team will have the luxury of competing at home.

This time, though, the challenge hits another level.

The Hawks (8-1 overall) host Pella Christian (8-1) in a Class 1A contest here Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

With a win, South Hamilton would advance to the quarterfinals and play either ACGC or Underwood for a spot in the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.

But first, they must solve Pella Christian.

The Eagles are led by senior quarterback Isaac Kacmarynski and are coached by Rich Kacmarynski, the former head coach at Central College, where he went 62-15 in seven seasons before stepping down.

Kacmarynski has thrown for 880 yards and 10 touchdowns with just one interception on 101 attempts. He is also one of the leading rusher for Pella Christian with 926 yards and 15 more scores.

Junior Benny Schirz has a team-high 970 yards and 15 TDs, while three other have ran for at least 200 yards. Trevor Veenstra tops the Eagles with 17 receptions for 409 yards and seven scores.

Pella Christian has posted four consecutive wins since a 15-13 loss to fellow playoff qualifier Sigourney-Keota. That includes a 31-0 shutout of Iowa City Regina in the opening round last week.

The Eagles have also bested Des Moines Christian, Monroe-PCM and Central Decatur this year. In 2016-17, they went a combined 21-2, falling to Regina twice by two points each season late in the playoffs.

South Hamilton had little trouble with Ridge View in the first round, winning 54-12. The Hawks have scored at least 34 points in all eight wins this season, surpassing 50 points four times.

As they have done all year, the ground game was the focal point on offense, as Noah Gunderson and Nick Severseike each went over 100 yards, with Gunderson scoring three times. South Hamilton finished with 437 yards and six TDs on the ground.

Paul Skartvedt, in his first season as head coach after spending time as an assistant, has the Hawks churning up yards in bunches. They have 3,281 yards on the ground and 53 touchdowns, with Severseike leading the way with 729 and 10 scores.

Gunderson has 592 and 15 TDs, and Landen Skartvedt has 658 and eight. Tjerdan Johnson has over 500 yards of total offense and six touchdowns.

South Hamilton has won six in a row since a loss to West Marshall in early September. The Trojans are unbeaten and still alive in the 2A playoffs.
