Webster City girls lose postseason tilt to Wildcats

HUMBOLDT — Kristine Mason couldn’t help but think “what if” following Webster City’s 3-0 loss to Humboldt here Wednesday in a Class 1A regional contest.

The Lynx ended the season with seven wins, the most for the program the 2016 team went 8-7. They finished fourth in the North Central Conference, winning five matches, and won five matches at home.

But injuries kept Webster City from putting fielding its planned lineup for much of the second half.

“This was a tough one, but we played really well,” Mason said. “This is our best finish to a season since 2016. It’s hard not to wonder where we’d be if all of our players were at 100 percent and we didn’t have the injuries we’ve faced all season.

“I am beyond proud of the progress we have made and look forward to seeing where these underclassmen take us from here.”

During the regular season, the Lynx dropped two matches to the Wildcats, falling by scores of 3-0 last month and 3-1 last week.

The match marked the final one for seniors Addyson Beaulieu, Kendyl Daniels, Jillian Symens, Kamey Stanley, Caitlyn Gapp and Joleah Stuhr. The group has combined to win 21 matches over the past four years.

“Each time we’ve faced Humboldt this year, we have a difficult time converting our chances. The same was true (Wednesday),” Mason said. “Jo’s performance was outstanding to close her chapter. Kendyl and Caitlyn fought so hard for the full 80 minutes; Jill, despite being a target for their entire defense, still got us close to scoring many times; and Kamey kept the team energy up when she stepped onto the field. Addy continues to lead from the sidelines as her season ended early due to injury.

“I will miss Jill, Jo, Kamey, Kendyl, Caitlyn and Addy so much. Not only their immense impact on the field but their leadership that guided the team. They’re really special group that left a huge impression on this program.

“Every senior should be proud of their performance.”
