Ready to roll

IOWA CITY — For the first time ever, the Webster City football team will head to Iowa City for the postseason.

The Lynx square off with Iowa City Liberty in a Class 4A contest here Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The winner between Webster City (6-3 overall) and Liberty (8-1) meets either Newton (7-2) or Carlisle (8-1) next week in the quarterfinals.

Following a loss to fellow playoff qualifier and district champion Spencer, the Lynx and Bob Howard responded, blasting past Storm Lake and Denison-Schleswig over the final two weeks to secure the runner-up spot out of the league.

In those two games, Webster City outscored its opponents by a combined 118-14. In fact, following each loss this year, the Lynx earned wins by at least 35 points.

Junior running back Jaxon Cherry continues to put up eye-popping stats, rushing for 1,664 yards and 29 touchdowns while averaging 8.6 yards per carry. As a unit, WCHS has 3,306 yards on the ground and 44 touchdowns.

CJ Hisler, a senior, has 699 yards and two scores, classmate Ty McKinney has 452 with eight and 10th-grader Cael Nixon has 264 and two. McKinney has also thrown for 568 yards and six touchdowns on the year, as Keegan Hisler has 215 yards and Connor Hanson 141.

The Lynx defense, which has forced 14 turnovers and recorded 16.5 sacks, will be tested by the Lightning and quarterback Graham Beckman. The junior has 2,127 yards passing and 27 touchdowns, adding another 200 yards and four scores with his legs.

Beckman is completing 64 perecnt of his passes and has just four interceptions on 205 attempts. Trey Gregoire leads the team with 512 yards on the ground, while Garrett Gregoire has 31 receptions for 666 yards and eight scores.

Wyatt Williams, Christian Barney and Lucas Meyer all have over 300 yards receiving, at least 25 receptions and have scored a combined 17 TDs.

Iowa City Liberty, which was created in 2017, has won six straight since a loss to Western Dubuque, 36-30. They hold narrow wins over North Scott and Burlington, and topped Iowa City High at Kinnick Stadium in the Battle of Zeus to begin the season.

The coaching staff for the Lightning, which is led by James Harris, also features former Iowa Hawkeyes Scott Chandler, Landan Paulsen and Keenan Davis. Harris was previously the head coach at Washington High School in Iowa and was a graduate strength and conditioning coach for Iowa State University.
