Lynx headed to Iowa City

The Webster City and South Hamilton football teams know their playoff opponents for this Friday night.

For the Lynx, they will travel to Iowa City Liberty for a Class 4A contest, while the Hawks welcome in Pella Christian to Jewell.

Both games kickoff at 7 p.m. with the winners advancing to the quarterfinal round and moving one step closer to the UNI-Dome.

Webster City (6-3 overall) closed out the regular season with a convincing win over Denison-Schleswig to place second in the district behind Spencer. The Lynx lead 4A in rushing touchdowns with 44 and rushing yards with 3,306, while ranking second in all-purpose yards with 4,532.

Junior Jaxon Cherry is the leader with over 1,600 yards and 29 scores, while CJ Hisler, Ty McKinney and Cael Nixon have all been key runners in the offense under Bob Howard.

Their opponent, the Lightning (8-1), lead 4A in passing yards with 2,282 behind Graham Beckman. The junior has over 2,100 of those yards and has several worthy targets to throw to.

Liberty, which became a school in 2017, features former University of Iowa standouts Scott Chandler, Landan Paulsen and Keenan Davis on the coaching staff.

The winner between Webster City and Iowa City Liberty faces either Newton (7-2) or Carlisle (8-1) in the quarterfinals.

South Hamilton (8-1) rolled past Ridge View in the opening round last week, scoring over 50 points for the fourth time this season. The Hawks lead 1A in rushing touchdowns (53) and rushing yards (3,281), while ranking third in all-purpose yards (4,258).

Nick Severseike leads the team with over 700 yards rushing, while Noah Gunderson has 15 touchdowns. Both Gunderson and Landen Skartvedt have ran for over 590 yards.

Pella Christian, a 31-0 winner over Iowa City Regina last week, is coached by former Central head coach Rich Kacmarynski, who won over 60 games at the school before stepping down.

The winner between South Hamilton and Pella Christian advances to face either ACGC (7-2) or Underwood (9-0) in the quarterfinals next week.
