Second-quarter drought costs SH girls against Nevada

Diersen notches 12 points in setback

JEWELL — A rough second quarter offensively put the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team in a crater it was unable to dig all the way out of on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night.

Leading 7-4 after one quarter, the Hawks went more than six minutes without a point to start the second and were outscored 14-2 by Nevada. The Cubs rode the nine-point halftime advantage to a 39-34 Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

“The second-quarter dry spell really cost us,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “Their size and physicality in their zone gave us a lot of trouble. We gave away too many possessions and simply didn’t take enough shots.”

South Hamilton (7-13, 5-9 HOIC) was within six after three quarters and actually took a two-point lead at one point in the final period, but Nevada had an answer.

Nevada (8-13, 7-7 HOIC) freshman Elie Tuhn played a pivotal role in her team’s win, as she canned five 3-pointers and led all scorers with 19 points. Sydney Mosinski added 12 points in the victory.

Breanne Diersen caught fire from outside to keep South Hamilton within striking distance. The senior forward buried four triples for all 12 of her points. Sydney Friest chipped in six points, while Hailey Diersen and Caleigh Hewitt notched four points each.

South Hamilton will wrap up its regular season tonight with a non-conference road game against Webster City. The varsity contest is expected to begin around 7:30 p.m.
