Easier said than done

OGDEN – The scoreboard told a story, one that was probably expected here last night. A different tale was weaved on the mat though and proved that the score can sometimes be a bit misleading.

South Hamilton may have been overmatched against ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Webster City, but the Hawks didn’t roll over and play dead either in a 60-15 Lynx victory during a quadrangular meet that also included Ogden and Woodward-Granger.

The Hawks took four of the opening five matches and led WCHS 15-6. It was all Lynx the rest of the way though, as they won the final nine weights by either fall or forfeit.

“We just weren’t ready to wrestle and hopefully that woke us up,” WCHS coach Chad Hisler said after the opening dual. “There were a couple matches that we let get by, but we got it turned around and finished pretty well.”

The dual started right in South Hamilton’s wheelhouse at 132 pounds and Charlie Reiter sent his team out to a quick lead. After opening up a 5-0 cushion after one period, Reiter put Cade Felts on his back for the fall in 3:27.

Gage Sadler responded for the Lynx and knotted the dual at 6 with a first-period fall over Preston Luksetich, but then it was all South Hamilton for a while.

Brian Greenfield hit a takedown and earned three near-fall points in the final 30 seconds to nip Brandon Peck, 9-6, at 145. Brian Carroll followed with his own come-from-behind victory over the Lynx Zane Williams at 152. Trailing 11-9 with under 15 seconds remaining, Carroll hit a headlock throw for the second time in the match and was awarded two near-fall points to prevail 13-12.

Williams had Carroll locked in a cradle twice, but both times the Hawk grappler wiggled free. Williams used the same move to pin Carroll at last weekend’s Perry Invitational.

“(Carroll) needed to give it a full six minutes if he was going to win and he did that,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “He kept his head in it.”

In another rematch from the weekend, South Hamilton’s fifth-ranked (1A) 160-pounder Luke Peters widened the gap against ninth-ranked Ryan Ferrari with three takedowns and a reversal en route to an 8-2 decision.

“From the very start, at 132 with Charlie, all the way up to 160 I thought we gave it the best go that we possibly could,” Brodie said. “Overall I really liked the way that they came out and fought.”

The Hawks continued to fight, but the Lynx talent eventually overwhelmed them.

Caleb Olson (170) ignited WCHS with a first-period fall over Noah Lutter at 170 and the Lynx went in front to stay when Rocco Miller (182) earned a forfeit.

Ashton High (195) followed with a quick flip of Zach Larson for the fall in 1:12. Top-ranked Gavin Dinsdale (220) played with Rylan Harris briefly before showing him the lights in 1:37. No. 2-ranked Cooper Lawson needed only 56 seconds to put Zach Lutter on his back for the fall.

Carson Hartnett (120) polished off the Hawks with a 32-second fall over Mason Alsager. Derick Khaleck (106), fifth-ranked Drake Doolittle (113) and Cole Nokes (126) were all winners by forfeit.

WCHS (15-2) remained dominant throughout the night with a 59-15 thumping of Woodward-Granger (22-12) and a 45-26 triumph over 11th-ranked (1A) Ogden (26-3) – two teams that own a combined 48 dual victories.

“I thought we did (look better),” Hisler said of the last two duals. “We wrestled with more fire, so that was good.

“We just appreciate (Ogden) letting us come in here and wrestle. It was a good warm-up for Saturday.”

Six Lynx grapplers – Khaleck, Doolittle, Nokes, Sadler, Dinsdale and Lawson – all went 3-0. Sadler picked up two more pins in the later duals; 17 of the team’s 29 victories were by fall.

Sadler missed most of December while recovering from a concussion and is just now beginning to look like himself on the mat.

“I think (Sadler) is starting to get more in shape, so that was good to see,” Hisler said. “He looked like he was more into it out there.”

Hartnett, Ferrari, Olson and High all finished 2-1.

South Hamilton (4-13) concluded its evening with losses to Ogden, 42-21, and Woodward-Granger, 45-31.

Reiter and Peters were the lone two Hawks to exit the gymnasium with three wins. Reiter, who has wrestled primarily at 138 this season before the drop down last night, picked up three falls.

Greenfield went 2-1 for the Hawks.

Both WCHS and South Hamilton will take part in conference tournaments on Saturday. The Lynx will be in Hampton for the North Central Conference tourney, while the Hawks will travel to Nevada for the Heart of Iowa Conference get together.
