To the Editor: The splash pad is a nice idea, however the $450,050 cost plus the annual cost of $65,000 to $70,000 for each year seems totally out of line for a city of our size. These funds could be better spent on our aging infrastructure. Wouldn’t it be simpler to give our families in need a free pass to our excellent baby pool which is barely a half block from the proposed splash pad? Virginia Meade Webster City
To the Editor: I'm particularly concerned about the recent assault on a local newspaper in Kansas (and) the aftermath and the denial of facts in general. Not the same, but the same genre: the stripping of the state auditor of his ability to audit. Without local accountability or accountability to facts account for yourself, make up your own rules, put on a hat, and be righteous for no reason at all. Society needs local newspapers and they should be commended for the constant upstream paddle. Mark Timm Webster City

Dear Editor, I represent U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley in 21 counties across central and south central Iowa. Part of my job is to hold annual open meetings in each county to listen and take opinions about the issues of the day and help Iowans with personal issues and requests. Dear Editor, When did it become a bad thing for someone, say the state auditor, to expose corruption? It kind of makes you wonder if someone’s got something to hide. I guess enforcing the law is not in vogue anymore. It’s just another example of the erosion of our democracy. Is there anyone, and I mean anyone, besides me worried when our elected officials act out like they’ve done? If corruption is okay, then what’s next? Raising 12 million turkeys every year, this important industry to Iowa’s economy supports 38,000 jobs, contributes over $50 million in wages, and generates more than $10.6 billion in economic activity.
