JEWELL — Paul Skartvedt has stepped down as head coach at South Hamilton.
Skartvedt’s resignation was accepted during a school board meeting on Monday night.
The Hawks went 22-17 over a four-year stint under Skartvedt, claiming two district championships while qualifying for the Class 1A playoffs three times.
In the spring of 2024, two members of Skartvedt’s staff, Kyle Galetich and Trev Houck, were honored as Class 1A assistant coaches of the year.
South Hamilton went 1-8 this past fall, but is slated to return standout running back Wyatt Gelder — who rushed for 1,423 yards and scored 16 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2025 — along with Maddux Becker, Lyndon Johnson, Kaden Dean, Garrett Johnson, Kash Northrop and Benjamin Swenson.
Swenson was the leading tackler as a 10th-grader, recording 51 stops with 7.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
Skartvedt replaced Cory Klemp following the 2021 season after serving as an assistant coach. He is a graduate of Hubbard-Radcliffe and played college football at Iowa State University under both Jim Walden and Dan McCarney.
