Webster City boys in action at NCC tennis meet

FORT DODGE — The Webster City boys tennis team picked up a fifth-place individual finish from Nathan Wardell here Wednesday at the North Central Conference meet.

Wardell, a junior, finished his day 4-1, capped off by an 8-4 victory over No. 3 seed Brayden Moestchen of Iowa Falls-Alden in the placement match. His only loss came to Adam Smeenk of Nevada, who would go on to place third and was the four seed.

“I’m extremely happy with the boys placing fourth overall,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “And just so happy for Nathan. What a day for him. He’s worked so hard and has improved so much.”

Hank Christeson earned a win over Jerry Flores of Hampton-Dumont/CAL in his first match in the singles draw before losing twice, including a tough 8-6 decision.

“It was big for Nathan and Hank to get first-round wins,” Fisher said. “Hank just ran out of gas a little but it was good for him to get that win under his belt.”

In doubles, the pairs of Jesse Toftee and James Elliott, along with Zayden Card and Fabian Ferto-Holdgrafer, each went 0-2.

Nevada won the overall team title. Braeden Moore and Jack Spence scored doubles gold. Leif Lundberg from Clear Lake was the singles champion.

Webster City now prepares for a Class 1A district meet in Waterloo on Wednesday featuring Waterloo Columbus, Hampton-Dumont/CAL, Maquoketa, Marion, South Tama, Dubuque Wahlert and Western Dubuque.

Starting at $3.46/week.
