MANCHESTER — The fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Webster City football team hits the road this week for a showdown with West Delaware.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. here Friday night.

The Lynx (3-0 overall) are coming off a 21-20 victory over No. 5 (4A) North Polk, adding to wins vs. Spencer and Fort Dodge earlier this year.

Jaxon Cherry and the WCHS run game continues to get the job done, as Cherry has 748 yards and 10 touchdowns on the year. He ranks first in the state in yards rushing and is tied for fifth in TDs.

Keegan Hisler had the key play in the win vs. the North Polk, as the senior scooped up a fumble and returned it 99 yards just as the Comets were looking to punch one in themselves.

Cherry now sits just 28 yards away from passing Gavin Dinsdale to become the Webster City career leader in rushing. He has 3,616 yards and has scored 62 touchdowns.

Leading the Lynx defense has been Cherry and Josh Stansfield, who both have two sacks. Cherry also has 25 tackles and eight stops for loss while Briar Klaver, Trevyn Lyns, Jayden Weinzetl and Hisler have over 10 tackles each.

West Delaware (1-2) picked up its first victory of the season last week, downing Union, 42-12. The Hawks had dropped their first two games to No. 6 (4A) Decorah (21-7) and fifth-ranked (4A) Western Dubuque (61-27).

Brent Yonkovic had a big night on offense, throwing for 183 yards with two TDs while rushing 17 times for 150 yards and three more scores. The junior has 423 yards passing and 329 yards rushing.

Sophomore Macoy Roling has 226 yards and a pair of scores while both senior Conrad Smith and junior Seth Jackson have over 100 yards receiving. Smith has a team-leading three TDs.

On defense, Jeryn Funke has recorded three sacks with the team recording 14 tackles for loss.

The Hawks won the only other meeting during the in 2011 playoffs by a score of 39-28.

Webster City will begin district play next week when they host No. 6 Clear Lake followed by back-to-back road tilts at No. 9 Hampton-Dumont/CAL and Charles City.
