ALGONA — The Webster City volleyball team avenged an early season loss to Bishop Garrigan downing the Golden Bears 25-20, 25-22, 14-25, 25-21 Tuesday night in a non-conference match.

Garrigan had defeated the Lynx in August at the St. Edmond tournament, 21-17, 21-11.

Webster City improved to 18-12 on the season, while Garrigan fell to 17-10.

“Garrigan served very aggressively and took us out of our offense at times to keep the games close,” said Webster City head coach Jess Howard. “Our blockers did a good job of slowing the ball down against two really good Garrigan hitters to help our back row defensively.

“The girls played poised when the game was tight and wanted the ball in their hands. This is the mentality I want them to have on the court at all times, especially at this point in the season.”

Webster City has the opportunity to play the role of a spoiler Thursday when they host Clarion-Goldfield-Dows. The Cowgirls are 23-3 on the year and 6-0 in the North Central Conference.

A Lynx win could possibly result in CDG having to share the title with Humboldt who currently sits at 5-1 in league play. The Lynx currently are tied for third place with Algona with 4-2 records.

Saturday the Lynx will compete in the Winterset tournament and then will open post-season play on Tuesday at home as they tangle in a Class 4A Regional match against Fort Dodge.
