WEBSTER CITY — Despite suffering their first district loss since 2019 last week, the goal of the postseason remains right in front of the Webster City football team.

The Lynx look to rebound from a setback to Spencer when they host Storm Lake here Friday night.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Webster City’s (4-3 overall) three-game win streak came to a halt following a 49-40 loss to Spencer. But, as the current second place team in the district, wins over Storm Lake (0-7) this week and Denison-Schleswig (4-3) next Friday night will punch that playoff ticket.

Led by senior Ty McKinney and junior Jaxon Cherry, the Lynx offense continues to pile up yards and points. McKinney has 480 yards passing and 350 rushing with 10 combined touchdowns, while Cherry leads all of Class 3A with 165 carries for 1,347 yards and 20 rushing TDs.

Cherry also has a receiving TD and anchors the WCHS defense with 45 tackles, including six for loss and four sacks.

As a team, Webster City has rushed for 2,457 yards and 29 touchdowns on the year, while also averaging almost 20 yards per catch.

That high-octane offense will look to take advantage against a winless Storm Lake. The Toreadors have allowed over 41 points in each of their last five, and have yet to score more than 17 in any of those games.

Joshua Steffen has 504 yards of total offense for Storm Lake, including 404 in the air. Julian Cortes Oropeza has 320 yards rushing and Brody Boeckman 153 yards receiving and three TDs.

Both of the past two meetings have been lopsided wins by Webster City, as the Lynx won last year, 41-0, and picked up a 42-0 triumph back in 2013.
