Lynx Moore unable to find rhythm in 3A discus, finishes 24th

DES MOINES — The good news for JJ Moore is that he still has the shot put and a chance to redeem himself. It worked out a season ago.

For whatever reason, the Webster City senior has never felt comfortable in the discus ring that sits just outside the Drake Stadium walls and that trend continued during the opening day of the state track and field meet yesterday.

Seeded fourth entering the Class 3A competition, Moore fouled on his first and third attempts of the preliminary round and slipped on his second attempt. The second toss stayed in bounds, but measured just 101 feet, 7 inches. It left him at the back of the 24-man field.

Dubuque Wahlert’s Duke Faley won the 3A state discus title with a heave of 165-9. He was the only thrower to surpass 156 feet.

Moore turned a similar disappointment in the 2021 discus into motivation for the shot put where he finished fourth. That’s exactly what he’ll try to do again today when the 3A shot put gets started at 4:30 p.m.

Moore is seeded third in the shot put.
