WEBSTER CITY — Following a season-opening loss to sixth-ranked (Class 4A) Boone last Saturday afternoon, the Webster City girls’ basketball team will make its home and North Central Conference debut this evening.

The Lynx (0-1, 0-0 NCC) will host Iowa Falls-Alden (1-2, 0-0 NCC) in a girls’ junior varsity/varsity doubleheader beginning at 6:15 p.m. inside the WCHS gymnasium. The varsity clash will tip at approximately 7:45 p.m.

Facing a formidable foe such as the Toreadors right out of the gate might not sound too appealing, but WCHS was able to get a good look at what worked and what didn’t. The Lynx have had four days of practice to fix the mistakes as they await the Cadets.

Iowa Falls-Alden opened its season with a 58-48 victory over South Hardin, but the Cadets have dropped back-to-back games to West Marshall (48-42) and Roland-Story (46-39).

WCHS will have to be ready to defend all over the floor, as IF-A possesses plenty of scoring options. Katie Meyer is the leader and three others — Hannah Redmond, Grace Renaud and Taylor Vanatter — have all scored in double figures as well. Meyer poured in 16 points against South Hardin and fared even better with 17 one night later against West Marshall.

No one scored in double figures for WCHS in its 54-37 loss to Boone. Haley Flaws and Nicole Sweazey both produced eight points and Devyn VanKooten came off the bench to supply five.

The Lynx will look to get junior post player Cassidy Nerland on track after she was forced to watch much of the opener because of foul trouble. Nerland is the leading returner from a season ago.

WCHS and IF-A split their two meetings last winter.
