Tour de Webster culminates with honor for Glascock
Oktoberfest welcomes riders and revelers
Mark Glascock is honored with the inaugural Kent Harfst Legacy Award, named for the late Webster City recreation leader whose passions included bike racing. The Tour de Webster, which took place Saturday, was a part of his vision. Glascock, center, is flanked by Becky Lubbers and John Marvel.
Mark Glascock was honored Saturday with the inaugural Kent Harfst Legacy Award during the return of the Tour de Webster, a bike race and ride that was a vision of the late Webster City recreation leader.
Harfst was riding an early leg of the Ride Across Iowa in a Day in 2019 when he was struck by a motorist about 30 miles from Sioux City. The late assistant city manager and the director of recreation and public grounds was not only a colleague of Glascock’s, but a close friend as well.
Kent’s wife, Becky Lubbers, along with his sons, Brady and Max Harfst, and grandchildren, joined the event for the honorary award dedication. Lubbers talked about her late husband’s spirit of service. She said that just hours before his passing, he stopped roadside to change a fellow biker’s flat tire.
The recognition of Glascock is particularly meaningful because he has dedicated three decades to enhancing Webster City’s parks and recreation, and supporting youth sports.
The 29.5-mile race route drew riders from across the state. Here are the winners:
Men’s Division
First: Chris Hansen, Iowa City;
Second: Travis Jass, Fort Dodge;
Third: Austin Neal, West Des Moines.
Women’s Division
First: Elaine Claude, Solon;
Second: India Nessa, Webster City;
Third: Rachel Ruden, Ames.

“Thanks to the incredible buying power that food pantries can tap into, every $10 provides 30 meals. With this year’s Tour de Webster contribution, nearly 2,000 meals will be purchased for families right here in the Webster City area,” Anna Woodward, Chamber director, said in the media release.
When riders finished their route — whether it was the 29.5-mile race to Woolstock and back, or the 13-mile “scenic ride” to Briggs Woods — refreshment awaited at the Seneca Street Saloon where the Achtung! Polka Band provided a seasonal soundtrack for the community’s Oktoberfest.
