Karl King band: A special night at the band shell

The Sunday evening concerts by the Karl L. King Municipal Band of Fort Dodge will continue on June 28, with a concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the band shell in Oleson Park. Dan Cassady is the band’s conductor, and Paul Bloomquist is the band’s announcer.

There will be many special treats in store as well, even before the band starts playing. The Southeast Valley School Fine Arts Boosters will be there around 6:30 p.m. to offer ice cream and fresh-baked goodies for a freewill donation to support their school programs.

This Sunday, the band will be saluting the music of Broadway, among other special treats. Composer Richard Rogers’ birth on June 28, 1902, will be celebrated with his “Symphonic Marches,” including “Valiant Years” from the ABC television series; the “March of the Siamese Children” from the hit musical The King and I”; the “Cinderella March” from the made-for-television musical “Cinderella”; “The Great Adventure” from the CBS television series; and the “Guadalcanal March” from the documentary series Victory at Sea, produced by NBC-TV.

Also, “Opening Night on Broadway” will feature familiar music written for some of the newer musicals to appear on the Great White Way, such as “The Producers,” “Avenue Q,” “Spamalot,” “Wicked,” and “The Lion King.” Mel Brooks, who turns 100 years old on June 28, wrote and directed the satirical comedy, “The Producers.”

Frank Piersol’s composition, “Maxi-March,” is on the program. Piersol is the former director of bands at both Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. Piersol’s commissioned march is a tribute to Max Whitlock from his family. Whitlock was the long-time band director at South Hamilton Schools in Jewell and a good friend of Karl King. Additional marches include one of Karl King’s earliest, “Carrollton,” along with Henry Fillmore’s “The Circus Bee,” and John Klohr’s “The Billboard.”

On the serious side will be Ralph Vaughan Williams’ march, “Folk Songs from Somerset” from his English Folk Song Suite; Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Procession of Nobles” from his dance-suite Mlada; and the “Farandole” from French composer Georges Bizet’s L’Arlesienne Suite No. 2. On the lighter side will be two compositions by Karl King, a beautiful aerial waltz, “Mystic Night,” and a trombone novelty from King’s circus days, “Mournful Maggie,” along with the popular Big Band hit, “Johnson Rag.”

Those attending these concerts are reminded to bring their own lawn chairs or blankets, since no public seating is provided. In case of inclement weather, the concert may be delayed or even canceled. Any announcement will be made on the band’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/karlkingband/.
