ISU Extension has Forestry Field Days planned for fall

AMES — Multiple forestry programs are available to Iowans this fall, including four in-person field days.

All events are being coordinated by Billy Beck, assistant professor and extension forestry specialist at Iowa State University.

“We’ve organized a wide variety of events intended for landowners, foresters and anyone with an interest in woodland stewardship,” said Beck.

The first fall field day is the Forestry Field Day — Timber Sales and Invasive Species, Aug. 29, and will focus on timber sales, invasive species removal, forest products and the many benefits of sustainable forest management. This event will be held in Decorah, and there is no-pre-registration required.

The Shimek State Forest Fall Forestry Field Day will be held Oct. 1 at the Shimek State Forest, in Lee County. This annual event is in its 46th year and provides an opportunity for participants to engage with forestry professionals and practitioners across Iowa. Registration is $15 and is due by Sept. 25.

The Yellow River State Forest Forestry Field Day will be held Oct. 3 at the Yellow River State Forest, in Allamakee County. Participants can engage with forestry professionals and practitioners across the state, as well as local forest stewards and woodland owners. A new feature this year is a half-day “forestry saunter,” where participants will see first-hand what an initial encounter between a forester and woodland owner looks like.

The Iowa Tree Farmer of the Year Forestry Field Day is Oct. 29 in Davis County. This educational event offers an opportunity to network with forestry professionals and practitioners across Iowa and includes a celebration of this year’s Iowa Outstanding Tree Farmer of the Year.

This event will be held at the winning farmer’s property, which will soon be announced and added to the website.

Starting at $3.46/week.
