Stanhope, population about 350, outpaces Webster City at the ballot box

Sadie Rippentrop, left, tags along with her mother, Dr. Gayette Grimm, as she gets her ballot for Tuesday's election at the Ed Prince Building on the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. Poll workers pictured from left are Pat Nokes, Doug Ryan and Doug Bailey.

Proportionately, more people in the little Hamilton County town of Stanhope, population roughly 350, went to the polls Tuesday than in Webster City, population 7,627, according to the Hamilton County auditor’s office.

The low proportion of votes in the county seat is likely due to the lack of contested races here. There were none.

In Stanhope, two people sought to be mayor.

Five candidates ran to fill three seats on the city council.

Kelly Wirtz was elected mayor, with 62 votes, or 54.39%.

Her competitor, Jeff Schroeder, got 52 votes, or 45.61%.

In the council race, Jill Haman, Vickie Anderson and Beau Jensen prevailed, the auditor reported.
