Juvenile faces threat of terrorism charge in WC school district incident

Local authorities and the Webster City Community School District responded to what has been called a “threat of terrorism” directed at the district on Tuesday, according to the Webster City Police Department.

According to Police Chief Shiloh Mork, a 14-year-old student made comments and attempted to recruit at least one other person to engage in violent acts at one of the school buildings on Wednesday.

The exact school building was not disclosed.

Due to the age of the student, their identity was also not disclosed. The individual was transferred to the Juvenile Detention Center in Eldora.

Webster City police conducted numerous interviews, Mork said, which resulted in a search warrant at the juvenile’s home in Webster City. As a result, the student was referred to Juvenile Court accused of a “delinquent act” of Threat of Terrorism, which is a Class D Felony under the Iowa code.

“We contacted Webster City police when we learned of a potential threat,” Dr. Mandy Ross, Webster City CSD superintendent, said. “We appreciate the thorough handling of the situation by Webster City Police. The safety of our students and staff is paramount, and we are grateful for the partnership we have with law enforcement on a daily basis.”

The Webster City school district and the WCPD were assisted by the Hamilton County Attorney’s Office and the Juvenile Court Office for the Second Judicial District.

The WCPD advises the public that if you see or hear something, say something whether it is thought to be credible or not.
