On Sunday evening, Webster City was filled with glee and laughter as the Kendall Young Library welcomed families to its Family Summer Kickoff Party, launching the library’s summer reading program with games, food, music, and activities for all ages.
The event featured balloon art, face painting, big games including Connect 4 and Jenga and live music from Chad Elliot, an international award-winning songwriter.
Families gathered outside the library to enjoy hot dogs, chips, cookies, and a variety of activities. Children moved between games and face painting, while parents and visitors listened to live music and learned about opportunities available through the library’s summer program.
One young participant enthusiastically joined musician Chad Elliot on stage to sing “We Will Rock You,” drawing smiles and applause from the crowd.
According to Children’s Librarian Doreen Ogden, the event is designed to build excitement for reading and create a sense of community for children and adults alike in the months ahead.
“The next two months is our summer library program, and it’s a way to get people engaged and enthused and just something fun before we start the next chapter of our adventures in the library,” Ogden said. She added that events like the kickoff party help the library connect with the community and showcase the resources it offers for all ages.
Ogden estimated that between 100 and 150 children would attend the event. Participants can also take part in reading challenges throughout the summer, giving families another opportunity to stay engaged with learning and library activities.
The kickoff party was just the beginning of Kendall Young Library’s summer fun; the community can look forward to numerous activities, such as crafts, book clubs, a pool party, DIYs, and more, as well as the library’s appearance at Webster City’s Market Nights, the Hamilton County Fair, and Hamilton County Fair Parade.
