A pair of gently worn shoes that you no longer need could help benefit a drive sponsored by the Webster City High School National Honor Society.

A shoe drive is currently underway and the NHS students would like local residents to donate unused shoes to the cause.

“The students were looking for a way to give back to the community and this was a project that no one’s done here before,” said NHA advisor Karen Daniels. Sneakers, loafers, sandals and other footwear in all sizes from child to adult are being accepted, as long as they are gently worn, in good condition or new, according to Daniels.

The high school organization is working with Funds2Org, to collect at least 2,500 pounds of shoes. Funds2Org then arranges to pick up the donated items and pay the organization based on the weight of the donations. The bonus factor is that the shoes are then shipped to developing countries to create job opportunities. According to its website, Funds2Orgs helps provide inventory to over 4,000 micro-entrepreneurs who sell the shoes to support their families.

Those interested in donating shoes can drop them off at several locations around Hamilton County. Donation boxes are set up at Fuller Hall, First StateBank, the Webster City daycare centers, Fareway, the Webster City Fire Station, Abens Realty, Stratford Elementary School and Webster City High School. Donations will be accepted for about 4 more weeks, according to Daniels.

The funds raised from the shoe drive will go right back into the community, she said.

The NHS students have already donated mittens, hats, shoes, leggings and other items to local elementary schools.

“We’re seeing a need as the weather gets colder,” Daniels said.

The group also hopes to make a donation to the Backpack Program and donate paper goods to Upper Des Moines Opportunity.

Daniels said the NHS students are also holding a food drive to benefit the local food pantries.
