BLAIRSBURG – Northeast Hamilton School students and new Principal Jessica Hector celebrated the first day of school with the traditional flag ceremony on Monday in Blairsburg.

Students in Kindergarten through sixth grade gathered around the flagpole to hear from Hector, who comes to NEH after serving as assistant principal at Webster City Middle School for the past three years.

“I have a lot to learn,” Hector admitted to the students, asking them to help her as she becomes familiar with the school and learns all their names.

“The pride at Northeast Hamilton will continue,” pledged Hector. “I am asking all of you students to do your part.”

Hector asked students to do their best in their studies but also to remember that they are part of a team.

Northeast Hamilton Elementary School students assembled at the flagpole for the traditional first day of school ceremony on Monday. After hearing from Jessica Hector, the new school principal, the students joined with American Legion Post 633 members Wayne Wahlert and Don D. Williams in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the "Star Spangled Banner"

“We’re all in this together,” said Hector. “I ask you to be respectful, be responsible, work hard and do your best.”

Hector told the students that they should be proud of their country because it is the best country in the world.

“This flag stands for freedom,” stated Hector, explaining that the sacrifices made under that banner represent many freedoms, among those is the opportunity to receive an education.

Williams American Legion Post 633 past commanders Wayne Wahlert and Don D. Williams were assisted by NEH custodian Cody Crouch in hoisting the colors of the American and Iowa flags.

The assembly then joined in in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing the “Star Spangled Banner.”

“Let’s get this party started!” Hector encouraged the students as they headed back to their classrooms for the new year.
