Going pink

The Webster City Lynx Softball Team is going pink Monday night.

The team is dedicating the last regular season game, July 8, against Forest City to the Banning family. Kelly Banning, wife of DFJ Sports Editor Troy Banning, was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 22 and has been undergoing chemotherapy treatments.

Head Coach Jess Howard said the event will feature a silent auction, including pies. There will also be a live auction at the end of the game. Two half hogs have been donated by Gourley Farms. Custom-made Webster City bag boards, courtesy of Deacon Garvey and 39 Design, and a t-shirt signed by all Lynx softball players that Troy Banning has covered during his nearly 20 years with the DFJ are part of the auction.

Howard said the team will also offer spectators a chance to run the bases with Lynx softball players for $5.

“Troy has been a big part of a lot of people’s lives in Webster City,” Howard said. “Anybody who goes through any sort of Webster City athletics knows Troy. He’s written about the athletes at their highest points and their lowest points. We want to show him our support.”

The junior varsity game begins at 6 p.m. with the varsity game expected to begin around 7:30 p.m.
