Going green

ACE Community Center summer youth gardening camp begins

Got a green thumb but no garden? The annual Youth Summer Camp at ACE Community Center begins today, June 6 and runs through Aug. 1. The camp will be held each Tuesday. The free sessions are open to children in first through fifth grade.

“Youths can learn more about gardening and where their food comes from,” said ACE Executive Director Janet Toering.

Not only will campers get to plant vegetables, they will also get to make dishes with the foods they grow. Campers will get to take their cooking creations home along with healthy recipes for the whole family.

“It’s not too late to join summer camp,” said Toering.

The camp will be held at the Boone River Country Community Garden, which is located at ACE Community Center.

“Come and join the fun,” said Toering.

Free transportation will be provided to and from ACE from the Webster City Middle School and Spanish church. Students will be picked up at the middle school and church from 11:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. and dropped back off at 1:30 p.m.

Campers will also be given a free sack lunch while at the event.

Registration and consent forms are available at ACE Community Center, 1440 East 2nd St., Webster City.

Adults wanting to get in on the fun can rent garden space for the summer.

Toering noted that there are still raised garden bed spaces available to rent. Individuals can rent a 4-foot x 10-foot space for $35 for the summer season.

Tools, water and hoses are available for those who wish to utilize them.
