Huisman to speak Thursday at S.A.L.T.

Longtime area columnist will share stories of Hamilton County

Arvid Huisman.

Well-known area columnist, Arvid Huisman, will present a program, “Hamilton County …. my hometown,” at the Hamilton County S.A.L.T. meeting scheduled for Thursday, June 1, at the Kamrar Lions Building.

Coffee, treats and blood pressure checks will be offered from 9 to 9:30 a.m. before upcoming local events from each Hamilton County community and announcements from law enforcement officials.

Huisman will share 60-plus years of memories of each town in his home county. He came to Hamilton County at the age of four in 1952 and remained until he and his wife moved to Sioux City in 1974. Three years ago, after a 40 year absence, he returned for two years before returning to the Des Moines area last summer. Huisman was married for 43 years to the former Cindy Fisher of Webster City who died unexpectedly in early 2013. Eighteen months later, he married Julie Sewell Keller of Blairsburg. He and Julie are both retired and reside in West Des Moines.

He began his career at KJFJ Radio where he worked for seven years before becoming sports editor of the Daily Freeman-Journal. After a lengthy career in the newspaper industry, Huisman became the development and communications director for The Salvation Army of Central Iowa, a job he held for seven years before retiring in 2014. Arvid writes a weekly column for a dozen Iowa newspapers and contributes to the Iowa History Journal, a bi-monthly magazine.

All S.A.L.T. meetings are free of charge and open to the public. No reservations are required to attend. For additional information, contact Marilyn Middleton, Marketing Coordinator at Southfield Wellness Community, 832-3881.
