Shoe drive continues

Donations can be dropped off at home wrestling, basketball events this week

A pair of gently worn shoes that you no longer need could help benefit a drive sponsored by the Webster City High School National Honor Society.

A shoe drive is currently underway and the NHS students would like local residents to donate unused shoes to the cause.

“The students were looking for a way to give back to the community and this was a project that no one’s done here before,” said NHA advisor Karen Daniels. Sneakers, loafers, sandals and other footwear in all sizes from child to adult are being accepted, as long as they are gently worn, in good condition or new, according to Daniels.

Daniels said the shoes can be dropped off at home wrestling meets and basketball games this week.

“We’ll have the boxes by the door that people enter or by the gym door,” Daniels said. She added that the shoes should be either tied or rubber banded together.

The high school organization is working with Funds2Org, to collect at least 2,500 pounds of shoes. Funds2Org then arranges to pick up the donated items and pay the organization based on the weight of the donations. The bonus factor is that the shoes are then shipped to developing countries to create job opportunities. According to its website, Funds2Orgs helps provide inventory to over 4,000 micro-entrepreneurs who sell the shoes to support their families.

Those interested in donating shoes can drop them off at several locations around Hamilton County.

The funds raised from the shoe drive will go right back into the community, she said, adding that the money will benefit such projects as the Backpack Program and donate Upper Des Moines Opportunity.
