The Webster City football team knocked off both a district foe and North Central Conference rival here last Friday on Senior Night, as they took care of Algona, 35-21.

Aiden Hrnicek scored four rushing touchdowns and Jaxon Griffith ran for 143 yards, all as part of a 55-carry, 290-yard performance on the ground for the squad. Kaleb Hansen added 92 yards and a TD.

The No. 22 Lynx (3-5 overall, 2-2 in District 1) also posted a 21-14 win on the road over No. 13 Humboldt earlier this year. The victory vs. 23rd-ranked Algona snapped a two-game losing skid after setbacks to district frontrunners Sioux City Heelan and Sioux Center.

A big second quarter saw Webster City score three touchdowns and help put the game away, as they led at the half, 35-14. Hrnicek ran 20 times for 69 yards in the victory, while Griffith also had 20 carries.

“Our kids did a great job of executing the gameplan,” WCHS head coach Andy Brim said. “The offensive line did a tremendous job of setting the tone for the game on the first drive. Jaxon had another solid night rushing, while also being a key defensive player.”

Eli Estlund anchored the defense, recording three quarterback sacks, five tackles for loss and 6.5 stops in all. Griffith and Hrnicek each had 5.5 tackles, while Dawson Bertran registered five tackles, including one for loss.

“Eli set a single-game record for sacks with his three,” Brim said. “To date, playing both ways as many snaps as he does is pretty incredible.

“Defensively, we gave up more yards than we would like to, but I thought the kids adjusted to things well and made plays when they had to down the stretch.”

Griffith also picked off a pass and had a 54-yard kickoff return. Israel Torres was 5-for-5 on extra-point attempts and had five touchbacks on six kickoffs.

Webster City will look to close out its regular season in style when it travels to MOC-Floyd Valley (4-4, 1-3) this coming Friday. The Lynx remain alive for one of the at-large playoff bids in Class 3A.
