The season came to an end for the Webster City girls tennis team here this past Saturday.

After splitting the six singles matches with Independence in a Class 1A team regional quarterfinal, the Lynx dropped two points in doubles, falling 5-3.

Alivia Burns, Olivia Bergman and Natalie Segar all scored wins in singles to even things early on with Independence, who advanced to face Dike-New Hartford on Wednesday in a Region 7 semifinal.

The winner between Independence (7-4 overall) and Dike-New Hartford (13-1) faces either St. Edmond (7-0) or Carroll Kuemper (4-3) on Saturday in Waterloo from Byrnes Park.

For Webster City (6-6), it marked the final matches for seniors Burns, Josslyn Carden, Camdyn Coons, Maja Gordon, Alivia Hector, Kaylee Kohl, Brooklyn Neddermeyer, Otteros and Allie Severe.

“It’s always hard at the end of the season,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “There’s heartbreak and disappointment. This group has worked extremely hard, they’ve been coachable, they’ve improved and they have cared about the sport and each other.

“It’s always hardest for me as a coach in these moments as I start to think about what I could have done better to help them reach their goals, to get them a few more wins, to give them a few more days together. They have been a wonderful group to work with and the senior class has been such a wonderful group that has given so much to this program and done so much to grow it moving forward.”

Burns scored a straight-set win at No. 2 over Tessa Post, 7-5, 6-4, while Bergman won in a super-tiebreaker at No. 5 and Segar scored a straight-set victory at No. 6. Bergman bested Laney Starling, 5-7, 6-2, (10-8) and Segar topped Liberty Brown, 6-4, 6-2.

Starting at $3.46/week.
