Lynx in action at regionals

BOONE — The Webster City girls tennis team came up short of advancing anyone through to individual state at a Class 1A regional tournament here Wednesday.

The doubles team of Allie Severe and Alivia Burns finished third, securing a possible state bid as a alternate.

Severe and Burns rolled into the semifinals, winning in the opening round over a pair from North Polk, 6-2, 6-4. In the final four, they fell to the runner-up team from Sioux City Heelan in straight sets.

“I felt like Allie and Alivia got snubbed in the seed meeting and played with a chip on their shoulders because of it,” WCHS head coach Mark Fisher said. “I thought they played some of their best tennis against Heelan in the semis. I loved the fight that they showed after getting down early in the third place match and coming back to win it.

“They worked extremely hard and I am extremely proud of what they have accomplished these past three years.”

The other doubles team from Webster City of Olivia Bergman and Natalie Segar lost to the eventual champions from Boone in the opening round.

“It was a tough draw for Olivia and Natalie, but I felt like they played great tennis against a Boone team that just rolled through the entire field,” Fisher said. “It will be exciting to see how much they progress moving forward.”

In singles, Gabbie Sebert won her first match before falling to Aila Friis of Bishop Heelan, who went on to place third overall. Sylvia Otteros lost in the opening round for the Lynx.

Sebert topped Brooklyn Schroeder from Saydel in a super-tiebreaker before a straight-set loss to Friis. Otteros fell to Ella Hill of North Polk in a super-tiebreaker in the first round.

“While disappointing that we didn’t get anyone to state, I am very proud of the work and the effort these girls put in,” Fisher said. “They represented our program, our school and our community so well.

“They are a such a great group of girls and it hurts to not be able to get them across that finish line.”

The Lynx will now prepare for team regionals on Saturday when they host Independence.

Starting at $3.46/week.
