QUICK TURNAROUND

For the most part, Webster City girls tennis coach Mark Fisher hasn’t experienced much of an impact on his roster with the sport switching from spring to fall in 2025-26.
That doesn’t mean everything has been as normal as usual.
A shortened season has meant only a handful of practices before the Lynx hit the courts for live action, which happens on Thursday when they host perennial state contender Dike-New Hartford and Ballard.
From there, the schedule is packed with meets on a consistent bases including eight duals and an invitational before the calendar even flips to September.
“It’s definitely been an adjustment with scheduling and figuring the best way to lead into the season and prepare,” Fisher said. “Having just four practices before our first meet is a new challenge, but all in all, I’m excited for this change.”
Returning to the varsity lineup for Webster City will be No. 1 player Allie Severe, along with Alivia Burns and Gabbie Sebert. Natalie Segar, Sylvia Otteros and Olivia Bergman all gained valuable experience in varsity positions this past spring.
Severe won four matches in the top position last season. Burns had three victories in the No. 3 role and was 5-0 playing No. 4. Sebert had a record of 7-4 at the sixth spot in the order.
“We did lose Morgan Hackbarth to volleyball, but typically, we don’t have a ton of volleyball girls out for tennis,” Fisher said. “I actually feel like we picked up some numbers from girls who would have otherwise played soccer, golf or ran track.
“Alivia and Josslyn are both going to try and play both tennis and volleyball.”
Paisyn Bare, Camdyn Coons, Kaylee Kohl, Josslyn Carden, Greta Kenville and a host of others will be counted on to provide depth.
Last spring, the Lynx went 11-6 overall and 4-1 in the North Central Conference, finishing second to St. Edmond. The Gaels have captured each of the last three league titles.
“I know St. Edmond has ruled the NCC, but we feel like we have a chance to compete for the title this year,” Fisher said. “We think we have some strong returners and a good group looking to step in and make their mark.
“Our girls have been working hard and are ready to step up this fall. I think if we play well and keep improving, we can win the NCC and have a strong chance to get some state qualifiers. We need to improve each day, but the potential is there.”
