The Webster City girls soccer team heads into the final stretch of the regular season this week with plenty of momentum.

Last Thursday night, the Lynx extended their current win streak to four with a 3-1 victory over Belmond-Klemme.

Jayme Perez evened the score at 1-all by converting a penalty kick as Janey Putney put Webster City (5-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 in North Central Conference) up with a goal. Leading 2-1 after the opening half, the Lynx got an insurance goal from Sandra Fuentes-Cruz.

“This was our redemption from the first time we saw Belmond-Klemme,” WCHS head coach Kristine Mason said. “They had us on our heels but we kept our heads on, got refocused and went to work.

“I’m so pleased that so many of our girls get on the stat sheet. We really play as a team. There isn’t one person carrying the weight, as we all do, and that is what is going to continue to make us a stronger program every year.”

Mia Hansen tallied an assist as Webster City recorded 25 shots with 15 on goal. Kate Feltz suffered an injury and was replaced by freshman McKenzie Vasquez, who saved a shot and recorded a clean sheet.

Fuentes-Cruz led the team with seven shots, as four game on goal. Hansen recorded five shots with three coming on goal.

“McKenzie’s a great asset to our team with an amazing willingness to step in wherever needed and make an impact,” Mason said. “Lovie, Julia and Heidi played most of the game in the flanks and hustled into the attack and dropped back to help on defense to keep our momentum.

“Jessica Utrera, another freshman, got some minutes and we’re excited about her bright future for us.”

Webster City heads to NCC leader Iowa Falls-Alden on Monday before returning home to play Humboldt on Thursday. They close the season out next week vs. Hampton-Dumont/CAL and at Fort Dodge.

Starting at $3.46/week.
